Korea Parental Leave Benefit Calculator (육아휴직급여, 2025 reform + 6+6)
A baby is coming — and whether your partner also takes leave changes the first six months by millions of won.
Computes South Korean parental-leave benefit (육아휴직급여) under the rules in force since 1 January 2025: months 1–3 at 100% of ordinary wage capped ₩2,500,000, months 4–6 at 100% capped ₩2,000,000, months 7+ at 80% capped ₩1,600,000 — paid in full every month, because the 25% withheld-until-return (사후지급금) is abolished. When BOTH parents take leave for a child under 18 months, months 1–6 switch to the 6+6 scheme’s escalating 100% caps of ₩2.5M/₩2.5M/₩3.0M/₩3.5M/₩4.0M/₩4.5M per parent (the ladder ends at ₩4.5M — a ₩5.0M figure circulates and is wrong). Single parents get months 1–3 at 100% capped ₩3,000,000. General AI still describes the pre-2025 system (80% flat, ₩1.5M cap, 25% withheld) — all three facts are dead.
기준: MOEL 2025 reform (1 Jan / 23 Feb 2025) · general 100%/100%/80% capped 250/200/160만원 · 6+6 ladder to 450만원 · 사후지급금 abolished · verified 2026-07-23

알아둘 점
Everything here is the post-2025 system: from 1 Jan 2025 the schedule is 100%/100%/80% with caps ₩2,500,000/₩2,000,000/₩1,600,000, and the 25% 사후지급금 (withheld until six months back at work) is ABOLISHED — the full amount is paid monthly during leave. If an AI answer describes 80% of wage, a ₩1,500,000 cap, or money held back until you return, it is quoting the pre-2025 system; all three of those facts are dead.
주의
If your partner ALSO takes parental leave for your under-18-month-old (simultaneously or after you), months 1–6 jump to the 6+6 ladder (100% capped ₩2.5M/₩2.5M/₩3.0M/₩3.5M/₩4.0M/₩4.5M) — at your wage that is worth ₩5,000,000 more over the first 6 months, before counting your partner’s own benefit. This is the input most people don’t know matters.
주의
The caps bind in 12 of your 12 months: the statutory percentage of your ₩3,500,000 wage exceeds the monthly cap, so you receive the cap. Across the modeled period the benefit replaces about 55% of your wage — budget on that number, not on “100%”.
알아둘 점
Separate from parental leave: 배우자 출산휴가 (spousal childbirth leave) is 20 paid working days from Feb 2025 (up from 10), usable within 120 days of the birth in up to 4 blocks. For SME employees the government-support portion is capped at ₩1,607,650 in total (2025 notice — the figure is re-set by notice each year).

This restates MOEL (고용노동부) policy on your inputs. Eligibility requires 180 days of 고용보험 (employment insurance) coverage, and the 고용센터 determines your actual benefit from your documents — not legal or benefits advice.
산출 방법
General schedule (in force from 1 Jan 2025): months 1–3 at 100% of ordinary wage (통상임금) capped ₩2,500,000/month; months 4–6 at 100% capped ₩2,000,000; months 7 onward at 80% capped ₩1,600,000. Every month is floored at ₩700,000. Monthly benefit = min(rate × wage, cap), then the floor: max(that, ₩700,000).
6+6 scheme (부모 함께 육아휴직제): when BOTH parents take parental leave — simultaneously or sequentially — for a child under 18 months, each parent’s months 1–6 pay 100% of ordinary wage with escalating caps of ₩2,500,000 / ₩2,500,000 / ₩3,000,000 / ₩3,500,000 / ₩4,000,000 / ₩4,500,000, then the general schedule from month 7. The ladder ends at ₩4.5M — a ₩5.0M month-6 figure circulates online and in AI answers and is wrong. The benefit is per parent; this tool computes one parent’s.
Single parents (한부모): months 1–3 at 100% capped ₩3,000,000, then the general schedule.
The 25% 사후지급금 — the portion formerly withheld and paid only after six months back at work — is abolished for leave from 1 Jan 2025. The full monthly amount is paid during leave. Pre-2025 descriptions (80% of wage, ₩1.5M cap, 25% withheld) no longer apply.
Duration: 12 months of leave per parent as standard, extended to 18 months when both parents each take at least 3 months, for single parents, or for a child with a severe disability. From 23 Feb 2025 leave can be split into up to 4 blocks (3 splits).
Eligibility: 180 days of 고용보험 (employment insurance) coverage before the leave. The 고용센터 determines the actual award.
배우자 출산휴가 (spousal childbirth leave): 20 paid working days from Feb 2025, usable within 120 days of the birth, in up to 4 blocks. For SME employees the government pays part of it, capped at ₩1,607,650 total per the 2025 notice (re-set annually). Reported as guidance — not computed into the parental-leave totals.
Verified against MOEL (고용노동부) primary sources on 2026-07-23. Caps and floors are statutory notice figures and can be revised; the schedule structure is law.
질문
- How much is parental leave pay in Korea?
- Since 1 January 2025: months 1–3 pay 100% of your ordinary wage (통상임금) up to ₩2,500,000/month, months 4–6 pay 100% up to ₩2,000,000, and months 7+ pay 80% up to ₩1,600,000 — each month floored at ₩700,000, and paid in full every month. If both parents take leave for a child under 18 months, months 1–6 instead use the 6+6 scheme’s escalating caps up to ₩4,500,000 per parent.
- Why does AI tell me it’s 80% of wage with a ₩1.5M cap and 25% withheld?
- That was the pre-2025 system, and it is what most models learned. All three facts died on 1 January 2025: the rate is now 100% for months 1–6 (80% from month 7), the caps are ₩2.5M/₩2.0M/₩1.6M, and the 25% 사후지급금 withheld until six months back at work is abolished — the full amount is paid monthly during leave.
- What is the 6+6 parental leave scheme (6+6 부모육아휴직제)?
- When both parents take parental leave — at the same time or one after the other — for a child under 18 months, each parent’s first six months pay 100% of ordinary wage with caps that climb month by month: ₩2.5M, ₩2.5M, ₩3.0M, ₩3.5M, ₩4.0M, ₩4.5M. Note the ladder ends at ₩4.5M — a ₩5.0M figure circulates widely and is wrong. From month 7 each parent is on the general schedule.
- Can I take 18 months of parental leave?
- The standard entitlement is 12 months per parent. It extends to 18 months in three cases: both parents each take at least 3 months of leave, you are a single parent, or your child has a severe disability. One parent taking leave alone (with a partner who takes none) stays at 12 months.
- How long is spousal childbirth leave (배우자 출산휴가)?
- 20 paid working days, from February 2025 (doubled from 10). It must be used within 120 days of the birth and can be split into up to 4 blocks. For SME employees the government covers part of the pay, capped at ₩1,607,650 in total under the 2025 notice (the figure is re-set each year).
