UK High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) Optimizer

Computes the High Income Child Benefit Charge on the higher earner’s adjusted net income (ANI): 1% of the household’s child benefit per £200 of ANI above £60,000, reaching 100% at £80,000. Then it computes the lever most people miss — relief-at-source pension contributions are grossed up ×1.25 before they reduce ANI, so a precise net contribution can zero the charge while collecting higher-rate relief on top. General AI still quotes the old £50,000 threshold, cites the household-income reform that was announced and then dropped, and tells you Self Assessment is required when PAYE collection has been live since September 2025.

Cơ sở: 2026-27 · threshold £60k–£80k (1%/£200) · CB £27.05+£17.90/wk · household reform dropped · PAYE collection live · verified 2026-07-23

Nhận định của người trong nghề

Thận trọng

The charge takes £1,168.70 — 50% of your £2,337.40 child benefit — leaving you £1,168.70. It is 1% per full £200 of adjusted net income above £60,000, so every £200 of ANI you shave off saves 1% of the benefit (£23.37).

Dấu hiệu tốt

£8,000 more into a relief-at-source pension (net) takes your ANI to £60,000 — the charge disappears. The provider grosses it up to £10,000, you reclaim £2,000 in higher-rate relief, and the £1,168.70 charge vanishes — so £10,000 lands in your pension at an effective cost of £4,831 (an instant 107% uplift on what you gave up).

Thận trọng

Inside the £60,000–£80,000 zone your effective marginal rate is brutal: 40% income tax + 2% NI + 11.7% HICBC (your £2,337.40 benefit spread over the £20,000 taper) ≈ 53.7% on every extra £1. A pay rise in this zone keeps barely half — and a pension contribution "earns" the same rate in reverse.

Nên biết

Since September 2025 you can pay the charge through your PAYE tax code instead of registering for Self Assessment — general AI still says a tax return is mandatory for HICBC, and it is not (unless you have other reasons to file).

Thận trọng

Never simply NOT claim child benefit to avoid the charge. Claim it and, if you prefer, opt out of the payments: the claim itself is what earns the non-working parent National Insurance credits toward their State Pension and gets the child their NI number automatically at 16. Not claiming forfeits both; claim-but-opt-out keeps both with zero charge to pay.

Nên biết

The move to assess the charge on HOUSEHOLD income was announced in Spring 2024 and then dropped (Autumn 2024). The charge still tests only the higher earner individually — two parents on £59,000 each (£118,000 household) pay nothing, while one earner on £80,000 loses the lot. If an AI told you household assessment is coming, it is citing a policy that never happened.

Nên biết

Estimates for planning, not tax advice — benefits in kind, salary sacrifice, and other ANI adjustments can shift the numbers. Confirm with gov.uk’s ANI guidance or an adviser before acting.

The charge moves with every pay rise and pension change. The Xearno app tracks your income against the £60k–£80k band — so January’s bill (or the pension fix) is decided in advance.

Phương pháp

The charge (since April 2024): 1% of the household’s child benefit per full £200 of the HIGHER earner’s adjusted net income above £60,000, reaching 100% at £80,000. The percentage is a whole number rounded down, per HMRC’s method. Below £60,000 there is no charge. The pre-2024 £50,000/£60,000 taper is obsolete — sources (and AI models) quoting it are out of date.

Child benefit 2026-27: £27.05/week for the eldest child plus £17.90/week for each additional child; annual figures are weekly × 52. Two children = £2,337.40/year.

Adjusted net income = taxable income − (relief-at-source pension contributions × 1.25) − (Gift Aid donations × 1.25). The ×1.25 gross-up is the whole trick: £8,000 paid in (net) removes £10,000 from ANI. Salary-sacrifice and net-pay-arrangement pension contributions never enter taxable income in the first place, so they are excluded from this field — entering them here would double-count.

The zeroing contribution: net = (ANI − £60,000) ÷ 1.25. Its effective cost = net paid − higher-rate relief reclaimed (20% of the gross, limited to income above £50,270) − the charge no longer due. The tool reports the gross amount landing in the pension against that effective cost.

Marginal exposure: across £60,000–£80,000 the entire benefit is clawed back over a £20,000 span, so the charge alone adds (annual benefit ÷ £20,000) to your marginal rate — 11.7% for two children — on top of 40% income tax and 2% NI.

Collection: through Self Assessment, or (since September 2025) via your PAYE tax code with no return needed just for HICBC. The household-income reform announced in Spring 2024 was dropped in Autumn 2024; individual assessment stands.

Not modelled: the taper of the personal allowance above £100,000, benefits in kind you have not included in the income figure, and Scottish income-tax bands (HICBC itself is UK-wide and unaffected, but the 40%+2% marginal framing assumes rUK rates).

Câu hỏi

Is the child benefit charge threshold £50,000 or £60,000?
£60,000 since 6 April 2024, with the charge reaching 100% at £80,000 (1% per £200). The old £50,000–£60,000 taper is gone — but it dominates training data, so general AI frequently gets this wrong and overstates your charge.
Is the charge based on household income now?
No. A move to household assessment was announced in Spring 2024 and dropped in Autumn 2024. The charge tests only the higher earner’s individual adjusted net income — which is why two £59,000 earners pay nothing while a single £80,000 earner repays everything.
How do pension contributions reduce the charge?
Relief-at-source contributions are grossed up ×1.25 and subtracted from adjusted net income. Pay £8,000 net and £10,000 leaves your ANI — enough to take £70,000 down to the £60,000 threshold and zero the charge, while also collecting higher-rate tax relief on the contribution.
Do I need to file a Self Assessment return for the charge?
Not any more. Since September 2025 HMRC can collect HICBC through your PAYE tax code — you report via the online service and the charge comes out of your salary. Self Assessment remains an option, and is still needed if you must file for other reasons.
Should I just not claim child benefit if I earn over £80,000?
No — claim it and opt out of the payments instead. The claim earns the non-working parent National Insurance credits toward their State Pension and registers the child for an NI number at 16. Opting out of payments keeps both benefits with nothing to repay; not claiming at all forfeits them.
