Worth knowing

Your marginal rate is 14% but your effective rate is only 10.2% — only the income inside the top slice is taxed at 14%. A raise is never "eaten by the bracket": earning more always increases take-home.

Worth knowing

You are 13,504 of taxable income below the next bracket (20.5%). Crossing it only taxes the amount above 57,375 at the higher rate.

Caution

This models income tax only — it excludes provincial/territorial tax (a large share — often 30-50% on top) and CPP/EI contributions. Treat the take-home figure as an upper bound, not a paycheck prediction.

Methodology

Cumulative progressive calculation: each slice of taxable income is taxed at its bracket's rate — 14% up to 57,375, 20.5% up to 114,750, 26% up to 177,882, … up to 33% at the top. Taxable income = annual income − deductions.

Basis: Federal only; 2026 first-bracket rate 14% (Bill C-4), BPA $16,129. Bracket tables are updated when the jurisdiction publishes new rates; the tax year is stated in the tool name so you never mistake stale rates for current ones.

Scope: personal income tax only. Excluded: provincial/territorial tax (a large share — often 30-50% on top) and CPP/EI contributions. Real filings involve credits, reliefs, and personal circumstances this calculator deliberately does not guess at.

Questions

What is the top income tax rate in Canada in 2026?
33%, applied to taxable income in the highest bracket. Lower slices of income are taxed at lower rates — the top rate never applies to your whole income.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
The marginal rate is the tax on your next unit of income (your current bracket). The effective rate is total tax divided by total income — always lower, because earlier slices were taxed at lower rates. Budget with the effective rate; evaluate a raise or side income with the marginal rate.
Does this calculator include social security or other Canada taxes?
No. It models national personal income tax only and excludes provincial/territorial tax (a large share — often 30-50% on top) and CPP/EI contributions.
