The operator’s read

Worth knowing

Your marginal rate is 10% but your effective rate is only 3.3% — only the income inside the top slice is taxed at 10%. A raise is never "eaten by the bracket": earning more always increases take-home.

Worth knowing

You are 275,000 of taxable income below the next bracket (15%). Crossing it only taxes the amount above 1,200,000 at the higher rate.

Caution

This models income tax only — it excludes the §87A rebate (which zeroes tax up to ₹12L for many filers), cess (4%), and the old regime. Treat the take-home figure as an upper bound, not a paycheck prediction.

Methodology

Cumulative progressive calculation: each slice of taxable income is taxed at its bracket's rate — 0% up to 400,000, 5% up to 800,000, 10% up to 1,200,000, … up to 30% at the top. Taxable income = annual income − deductions.

Basis: New regime, FY 2025-26; standard deduction ₹75,000. Bracket tables are updated when the jurisdiction publishes new rates; the tax year is stated in the tool name so you never mistake stale rates for current ones.

Scope: personal income tax only. Excluded: the §87A rebate (which zeroes tax up to ₹12L for many filers), cess (4%), and the old regime. Real filings involve credits, reliefs, and personal circumstances this calculator deliberately does not guess at.

Questions

What is the top income tax rate in India in FY 2025-26?
30%, applied to taxable income in the highest bracket. Lower slices of income are taxed at lower rates — the top rate never applies to your whole income.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
The marginal rate is the tax on your next unit of income (your current bracket). The effective rate is total tax divided by total income — always lower, because earlier slices were taxed at lower rates. Budget with the effective rate; evaluate a raise or side income with the marginal rate.
Does this calculator include social security or other India taxes?
No. It models national personal income tax only and excludes the §87A rebate (which zeroes tax up to ₹12L for many filers), cess (4%), and the old regime.
