Self-Employment Tax & Quarterly Estimated Payments (2026 1040-ES)

First year with self-employment income — and nobody is withholding for you.

The first-year freelancer’s tax planner. Computes your 2026 self-employment tax (both halves of Social Security and Medicare — including how W-2 wages eat the $184,500 wage base first), federal income tax with the QBI deduction, and then the number that matters: the quarterly estimated payment §6654 actually requires. That number usually does NOT depend on what you earn this year — the safe harbor is 100% of last year’s tax (110% if prior AGI topped $150k), and if you owed $0 last year, no estimated payments are required at all. General AI reliably misses these mechanics and quotes stale parameters; this uses the 2026 Form 1040-ES figures directly.

Nên biết

Your 2026 federal bill: 12,037 — an effective 20.1% of your 60,000 profit. 8,478 of it is self-employment tax: as an employee, your employer paid half of Social Security and Medicare; freelancing, you owe both halves (15.3% on 92.35% of profit). That share exists even in years when your income tax is small.

Dấu hiệu tốt

The first-year golden rule: you had no 2025 tax liability, so the law requires NO estimated payments this year — zero, regardless of how much you earn in 2026 (as long as 2025 was a full 12-month year and you were a US citizen or resident). You cannot be penalized for skipping every quarterly date.

Thận trọng

But the bill doesn’t vanish — the full 12,037 lands at once when you file in April 2027. Save for it anyway: set aside about 20% of each payment you receive into a separate account, and April becomes a transfer instead of a crisis. Next year the safe harbor will anchor to your 2026 tax, so quarterlies begin in 2027.

Dấu hiệu tốt

The QBI deduction knocks 7,932 off your taxable income, saving about 952 — a 20% deduction on qualified business income, made permanent in 2025 and now with a $400 minimum when QBI is at least $1,000. It applies even with the standard deduction; no itemizing needed.

Nên biết

Federal only: most states with an income tax run their own estimated-payment system with similar dates — check your state. This is a planning model using the simplified below-threshold QBI rules, not tax advice; for SSTB limits, the 0.9% additional Medicare tax, or an uneven income year (annualized installments), see a tax professional or Form 2210.

Quarterly taxes fail from forgetting, not from math. The Xearno app tracks the income as it arrives and keeps the four dates — and the money set aside for them — where you can see them.

Phương pháp

Self-employment tax (2026): net earnings from self-employment = 92.35% of profit; no SE tax if profit is under $400. Medicare is 2.9% on the full net earnings. Social Security is 12.4% on net earnings up to the room left under the $184,500 wage base after W-2 wages — wages consume the cap first, so a well-paid day job shrinks or eliminates the Social Security portion of SE tax. Half of the SE tax is an above-the-line deduction.

Federal income tax (tax year 2026, per the Form 1040-ES rev. Feb 2026 worksheets): standard deduction $16,100 single / $24,150 head of household / $32,200 married filing jointly; seven brackets from 10% to 37%. Taxable income = profit − half SE tax + W-2 wages − standard deduction − QBI deduction.

QBI deduction: 20% × the lesser of qualified business income (profit − half SE tax) and taxable income before the deduction — the simplified below-threshold case, plus the new-for-2026 $400 minimum deduction when QBI is at least $1,000. The SSTB and W-2-wage/UBIA limitations that phase in above roughly $200k+ taxable income (higher for joint filers) are NOT modeled — above those thresholds the real deduction can be smaller.

Required annual payment (§6654): the lesser of 90% of this year’s tax and 100% of last year’s total tax (110% if prior-year AGI exceeded $150,000, or $75,000 married filing separately). If you had no tax liability last year — and 2025 was a full 12-month year and you were a US citizen or resident — no estimated payments are required at all. Separately, no penalty applies if the balance due after withholding is under $1,000. Each quarterly installment = (required annual payment − withholding) ÷ 4, because withholding is deemed paid evenly across the year (§6654(g)) — which is also why a late-year W-4 increase retroactively cures early installments while a late estimated payment does not.

2026 due dates: April 15, June 15, September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027 (all business days). The January installment is waived if you file the 2026 return and pay in full by February 1, 2027.

Skip-quarterlies penalty: an estimate of the Form 2210 computation, not the exact figure — each installment’s shortfall accrues at that quarter’s IRS underpayment rate (Q2 2026: 6%, Q3 2026: 7%; later quarters not yet announced, 7% used as an estimate) from its due date to April 15, 2027: penalty ≈ Σ shortfall × rate × days ÷ 365. The real computation compounds by quarter and stops accrual on the actual payment date.

Not modeled: state and local estimated taxes, the 0.9% additional Medicare surtax (wages + SE income over $200k/$250k), the net investment income tax, itemized deductions, tax credits, SE health-insurance and retirement-plan deductions, or spouse income beyond the single W-2 wages field. A planning model, not tax advice.

Câu hỏi

Do I have to pay quarterly taxes in my first year freelancing?
Usually not, and almost nobody knows this: if you had no tax liability on last year’s return (and it covered a full 12 months as a US citizen or resident), §6654 requires no estimated payments at all this year — regardless of what you earn. The full bill still arrives when you file in April, so save for it, but you cannot be penalized for skipping the quarterly dates. From your second year on, the safe harbor anchors to the prior year’s tax and quarterlies begin.
How much should I pay each quarter?
Not what most people compute. The required payment is the LESSER of 90% of this year’s tax and 100% of last year’s tax (110% if prior AGI topped $150k) — so if last year’s tax was modest, you can pay that smaller anchor in four installments and owe the rest penalty-free in April, no matter how good this year turns out. Withholding from a W-2 job counts toward it first.
Why do AI assistants get this wrong?
Freshness and mechanics. The 2026 parameters are newer than most training data — the $184,500 Social Security wage base, the Rev. Proc. 2025-32 brackets, the QBI deduction’s post-OBBBA permanence and its new $400 minimum, the 2026 quarterly underpayment rates. And the mechanics are interaction-shaped: models routinely miss that W-2 wages eat the Social Security cap before SE income, that the prior-year safe harbor makes current income irrelevant to the required payment, and that a $0 prior-year tax means no payments are required at all.
What happens if I just skip the quarterly payments?
An underpayment penalty that works like interest, not a fine: each missed installment accrues at the IRS quarterly rate (6–7% in 2026) until paid. On a $2,000-per-quarter obligation settled the following April, that is a few hundred dollars — real money, but often smaller than people fear. The exception worth knowing: raising W-2 withholding late in the year counts as if paid evenly all year and can erase the penalty retroactively.
I have a day job — how does that change things?
Three ways, two of them favorable. Your W-2 wages consume the $184,500 Social Security wage base first, so the 12.4% Social Security part of SE tax shrinks — and disappears entirely once wages exceed the base (only 2.9% Medicare remains). Your paycheck withholding counts toward the safe harbor before any quarterly payment is needed. And because withholding is deemed paid evenly across the year, a December W-4 adjustment can retroactively fix underpaid early quarters.
